Pansoh Manok, where?

Does anyone know where to find good pansoh manok around Kuching? My aunt can make some but not often, I know you can find some nice ones in Serian and along the Kuching-Serian expressway, but does anyone know any place closer to Kuching which serves it in the bamboo?

I had some at the Hilton the other day, it lacked ginger and a few other spices, though it looked and felt right. Price-wise was decent. Yet, where else can I find it, with or without the actual bamboo and the 'daun ubi' inside it?

Thanks in advance!

p.s. Pansoh Manok, an Iban delicacy, is chicken cooked in a bamboo stalk over a flame. Usually soupy, the chicken is marinated with ginger, salt and some vegetables, usually 'daun ubi.' Usually tastes salty.

Damn good stuff, wanted to make some in Sydney last year but couldn't find a bamboo stalk or daun ubi. Pansoh Manok in a pot is not pansoh manok at all, doesn't have that distinct taste.

The one I had in the Hilton had a generous serving of chicken, but the daun ubi was just a few miserable stalks. The other ulam vegetables that came with it was nice though.

Please don't tell me this is a Gawai and Christmas-only food! Its a traditional delicacy, and while it may be troublesome to cook, surely someone out there sells it nearer to the city, rather than having to travel all the way to Serian!

I eat this at Hilton's Waterfront quite often too. If my fading memory serves me correctly an Iban lady is selling this at Wonderful Place coffee shop near Hui Sing. I'll confirm this if I pass by Hui Sing in the next few days.

but having manok pansuh in hilton feels a bit off to me... coz it's a kampung type of dishes, shouldn't be eaten with ettiquete and such.. haaha... eat as much as u can and sweat as much then it'll be nice.

From an old issue of Kuching Talk.. there's this place called Aroma Cafe located at Jln Tabuan that serves ayam pansoh. Call them at 417 163.

Just called Aroma cafe, they don't do manok pansoh as ala carte, they only have it in a buffet setting. Anyway, thanks, Fuyu for putting this up, and dckw on giving me a head's up on the Hui Sing place.

It may be a delicacy, it may be 'kampung' food, but this is kampung food served in a nice setting, and food should not be confined to kampungs, hawker stalls and fancy restaurants, unless of course, they label it as 'authentic' but it tastes nothing like the real thing.

They serve kangkung, midin and umai in fancy restaurants, even as starters during formal dinners; there is no harm in this, it's just bringing the kampung food to an elegant, posh setting. As long as it does not impede on taste, I see ho harm done.
