Dear friends,

Re: B744? B734?

Perhaps I can help out here. First, to answer Lovebell's question about the telling the diff between a B742 and a B743. The trick is to look at the upper deck - the section just behind the pilot's cockpit. The B742 has a distinctly shorter upper deck than a B743; by about 6 windows short I believe. That is why the B743 is also given the tagname, SUD-Stretch Upper Deck, by its manufacturer, Boeing. The upper deck of the B743 and the B744 is the same in length. Only of course, you tell the B743 and the B744 apart by the fact that the latter has winglets. Now, my question. You mentioned that the B742 and B743 frequently lands at KIA, do they belong to MAS? The reason why I ask this is because I thought MAS only has B744 in its fleets right now. Only MASKargo operate B742 but as a freighter aircraft and not for pax. The only time I spotted a B742 at KIA was not a MAS but an aircraft chartered by Airasia to ferry to HAJ pilgrims to Mecca.

Now, about the B737 fleet. Yes, it is smaller than the B777 and B744 but larger than the Fokkers. MAS currently operates 39 B737-400 (B734). I think they also have one or two B737-500. Airasia operates the B737-300 (B733). The B737-200 (B732) is the oldest version and I don't think they fly to KIA anymore - at least not with MAS. But Transmile Air operates the B737-200 as a freighter aircraft and I think Batavia Air also flies this whenever their Fokker 28 (F28) aircraft is not in service. How to tell difference between the B737s? Again by the length of the aircrafts and by the engines they use. The B734 is longer and the most common B737 you'd see at KIA. The B732 has a longish type of engine and it is also very noisy since it does not have the modern "hushkit" (a device to "hush up" the noice caused by the engine when put in reversed thrust during landing) built into the newer generation B737s. However the longest B737 is the B737-800, which you'd never see in this part of the world - more common in Europe and the US.

Sorry for the long technical details people. Just that airplanes are my hobby and I have been in the industry long enough!! Thanks for the pix of the model airport of KIA. Hope the new airport (you notice ALL the airports in Sarawak is built by the SAME consortium- I wonder why ) will put us on the international map more prominently. KIA is the 4th busiest airport in Malaysia after KUL, PEN and BKI.

Ciao for now!

thanks, fredng! thank you for your detailed explanation. I think you are working with MAS?
All the designs of the airports in Sarawak look almost the same. I think they want to cut the cost for the design maybe.

hmmm.. if not mistkaen fred last time work with SQ right? not so sure... i think he ever post soemthing about it before about Silkair thing.

I'm positive 742 and 743 does land and take off here coz i used it before. and it's belong to MAS LOL... strange... and ehheh...it was in 2003. Direct flight from kch to s'pore and vice versa. As for now I don't know... coz haven't been ot airport for ages ;p ahhaah...

I'm not the the expert in aircraft just pua tang chui, and more towards 744 of SQ and QF, the rest I'm not so sure and MAS fleet I'm not familiar too hahah... and Fred should knows more since he love aircarft so much ahhaha... I got all my source from my late bf but he's gone... so only manage to know a bit, basic basic thing.

Besides, in all my post I didn't refer to MAS, I'm talking in general. So from ur post, 743 and 742 do land and take off here. No doubt. :)

the new KIA will not be the second biggest airport in malaysia.
the second largest (in term of size) should be langkawi airport .

I saw the model of KIA, yes it is better than the current one but i think because this is an extension airport, all the construction is "limited". that is u can't really do much about it but to make it "look" more modern.

Another pic of HKIA.

Hopfully the design inside the KIA will not be like KLIA.
