To new22003 and Edgar. Both has shown different point of views. Excellent thinking!!!

looking at the map, is the present route link the same as shown on the white dotted line?

Yes, now if only this stimulating debate can somehow get to the ears of those in power....

Rolls eyes at Edgar. Nice job on your drawing, could you have made the blue line with more curves? I take it you dont have an engineering background.

Also you didnt fully read the post below
Quote:

Also the word “coastal road” is a bit misleading. It also doesn’t have to exactly follow the coast, just use it as a guide and follow it when practical. Even the coastal highway in California doesn’t follow the coast exactly. Sometimes you will find yourself miles from it for practical reasons.

Anyone can make something so silly in the effort to prove their point. Here’s the revised version showing a fairly accurate version of the old road. The new route would actually be shorter, not cross any extra major rivers, access far more coastline, and still service most of the towns along the old route. As you can see this would open up a major tourist area all the way from Mukah to Miri. As is always done in other countries you would still keep the old route for those who want a free road or access to those bypassed areas. It would be a win win for all. If you wanted to take it a step further in the future you could even build 2 more bridges and shorten the route by several kilometers. The improvements like that could be built in stages.

The road would also act like a tree. Towns and cities along the way could build short branching connecting roads to the highway. Even though in my rendition Bintulu is now off the main road, they could easily build a connector. It would still be much faster to use the highway and connector road than to use the old road all the way to Bintulu.

Wow man, cool. I never thought I'd fancy a ride in Sarawak road but this really changed my mind. Sad thing is probably this road will not complete within my lifetime. hope my grandchildren can ride it.

Obviously, someone hasn't been driving the route before.

And I cannot understand the purpose of the map that you have attached, and the old 'principal' road is more or less, similar to the white line that I have drawn, except well, for a little execption.

And you very beautiful straight line drawing, is that supposed to be your idea of the 'coastal highway'? Because as far as I am concerned, with the level of your so called 'engineering background', should know that it is not possible. Factor in the poor geographical condition of our land, you cannot build anything that is that straight.

Come on mate, don't roll your eyes too early, grab the keys, do some driving, look at the place and come back and do some correction

That route on the map, COULD have been the expressway. I cannot see why we need a Coastal Highway, since you can't pretty much build the roads near the coast, and like you said in the own point,

"...Also the word “coastal road” is a bit misleading. It also doesn’t have to exactly follow the coast, just use it as a guide and follow it when practical. Even the coastal highway in California doesn’t follow the coast exactly. Sometimes you will find yourself miles from it for practical reasons...."

So what is the point of the coastal highway in the first place? With the limited areas of land reamining at the end of the river, you might as well build an expressway in the first place since it will not make much difference with the 'find yourself miles from it..' reason?

And for that reason, stop influencing people with your 5 years old brain imagination of the a straight line highway, you are making it sound like it is so darn possible, when in reality, it is not.

I don't think any of us know or have solid information on the geographical area. edgar probably making assumptions through the looks of google map. as usual edgar, don't try to act like you know everything and don't go shooting people's idea as if your idea are the most logical and correct.

I think jay's idea is good and hopefully its possible with the sarawak terrain.

Duh. coastal highway is cool and expressway is not.

Yes, by looking at the geographical surface from the satelite close up camera, you can see the amount of terrains, hills, mountains, low-level areas and to build a tarmac road on it, you need to have a concrete-like land and soil condition, or something close, you can just cut through the mountains and terrains in hope to get a close to straight line for a highway?

I am not acting like I know everything, I am talking from the point of where I know what is possible and what is not.

And stop influencing people about the coastal highway, cause it is not possible for Sarawak, there is no 'Duh-its-cool' factor in consideration, when people travel on the road/highways to get to one point to another, they want the shortest route + safest + easiest-to-get-there-route.

Yes, coastal highway can be a good idea, but not so good, until we get a proper expressway, I think that is the second best alternative. Take a look at the countries around the world, with 2 highway system, one the coastal route and the other the express route, which one is more important? which one generates more income? which one is busier? which one have a better return to the economy?

My point being, if you want a coastal highway, build it after we have an expressway. And what is so cool about having a coastal highway in Sarawak anyway? We don't have this sort of scenery to look at along the coast. If we have, then it might be worth to butt in a consideration still.
