Fire starting at 4 am is highly suspicious. It might have been caused by electrical short-circuit, which I doubt. Being a prestigious establishment and heritage in nature, wiring, plumbing, etc would have been regularly checked and updated. Don't ever rule out ARSON! Flush out known fire-bugs and start from there. Too bad that something built as long ago as 1876 should go up in smoke. Well, I guess the well-heeled will have to find a alternative watering hole.

Hey Webbie, keep us posted on this. Tough to find S'wak news with no Tribune. Thanx for the pics.

Erm...it's really a shock. Whole building burnt down completely within 2 hours. Where did the security go? Whoever or any SC's members should know how the building structure look like. Office and library were very far away from the entrance..There also kena bakar?... adalah... suspicious tu.. Poor thing, the renovation has just completed not more than 2 months, new parking lots, new entrance, beatifully done. Now...ermmmmm

Roads are open again. I just drove pass. Its worst than the pictures look. There's completely no roof anymore, and when u look inside, the walls are all charred and there's no more furniture. It looks like the main hall bore the grunt of the fire, the roof has collapsed in there. It definately took a really big fire to do that damage in 2 hrs. But with all the synthetic carpet and furniture fabric, it is possible for it to burn that fast.

Too be honest I'm not too shocked about this. Let this be a lesson to all Building owners and Developers that Fire Protection is so important. I'm a member of Sarawak Club and I can tell you that I have not seen any alarms or fire sprinklers in that building, which is constructed mainly from timber. There is the odd fire-extinguisher here and there though. But it could be expired.

And the new building does not resemble the original building back when it was 1st built. So anyone worried about a historical building being lost, it was lost to all the renovation a long time ago. I think the only existing part of the original building would be the main hall.

The important thing is lets hope no one was hurt or killed in the fire. On a bright side this is a good opportunity to use all that membership money they've accumulated to build a new and more modern club-house... with proper Fire Protection!!
