Santubong To Get RM50 Million Cable Car System

KUCHING, May 9 (Bernama) -- In a move to turn Santubong in the outskirts of this city into a premier tourist attraction, a RM50 million cable car project will be undertaken to ferry visitors in comfort on a scenic ride amid lush greenery up the legendary Mount Santubong there.

State Urban Development and Tourism Minister, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said the project, which would start in August and scheduled to be completed in two years, would be another significant new attraction for the Damai and Santubong areas and Sarawak as a whole.

"The primary appeal is its ability to offer tourists a spectacular view of the surrounding area including the forested slopes of the mountain. It is this rainforest setting that is the main selling point of the cable car system.

"I hope the establishment of the cable car system will become another milestone in the development of the area not only as a new tourism product for Sarawak but also to provide job opportunities for the people living in Santubong, Buntal and Bako," he told reporters, here Wednesday.

Later, Wong represented the state government in signing the concession agreement for the project with Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd (SCC), which was represented by its Executive Chairman, Abang Nawawi Abang Drahman.

Wong said the state government had granted the Sarawak-based Bumiputera company exclusive rights to design, build, complete, commission, operate and manage the cable car system for a period of 60 years.

Meanwhile, Abang Nawawi said the detachable mono-cable system would have 8-seater gondolas that could climb to a height of 769 metres and that its inclined length would be 2,535 metres.

He said the gondolas could travel up to a maximum speed of five metres per second from the base station, located at the foothill of the 810-metre mountain near the Sarawak Cultural Village.

KUCHING: The legendary Mount Santubong will soon have a new attraction - gondola cable cars

The RM50-million project financed by Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd, expected to commence in three months’ time and completed in about two years, is the first in Borneo.

It is jointly undertaken by a team of consultants led by Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd executive chairman Abg Nawawi Abg Drahman and Doppelmayr Seilbahnen, an Austrian ropeway technology provider which constructed the Langkawi Cable Car that started operation in 2003.

The base station for the cable car system is on a 23-acre site at the foothill of Mount Santubong.

Its cable will have a horizontal length of 2,385 metres, climbing to a height of 769 metres with an inclined length of 2,535 metres.

Visitors taking the ride will enjoy a breathtaking view that includes the South China Sea, Kuching city, Bako National Park, Mount Sejinjang and a diverse range of flora at close range.

According to Nawawi, a large part of the construction work will be carried out with the help of helicopters to minimise adverse impact on the environment.

Upon completion, the Santubong cable car system will be the third one in the country after the ones in Genting and Langkawi.

Tourism and Urban Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the State Cabinet gave the approval for the project in principle some two months ago but it took awhile to get things in order prior to the signing of the concession agreement.

“As the construction has to be environment-friendly, we have to be careful in mapping the route and the site. It involves many agencies and departments.”

Wong said the State government had given Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd the exclusive rights to design, build, complete, commission and operate the system for 60 years.

The minister noted that the cable cars would give Santubong an added attraction. The existing attractions are Sarawak Cultural Village, resort hotels, and a proposed theme park.

He believed that the cable cars would enhance tourism in Santubong and Sarawak as a whole.

Wong assured that his ministry and Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) would work closely with Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd to market and promote the ride to attract more tourists.

Wong later witnessed the signing of the concession agreement between Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd which was represented by Nawawi and the permanent secretary to the Tourism and Urban Development Ministry Sarudu Hoklai.

According to the agreement Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd would fully finance the design, construction, completion, commission, operation and management of the cable-car system and shall be allowed to collect and retain all revenues from the operation including sales of tickets, merchandise, products and beverages, rental of spaces and stalls, advertisements and other related activities.

Don't worry, it is jointly undertaken by a team of consultants led by Santubong Cable Car Sdn Bhd and Doppelmayr Seilbahnen, an Austrian ropeway technology provider which constructed the Langkawi Cable Car that started operation in 2003.

I think its a great idea. But $50million seems like a bloody big sum for cable cars.

I honestly don't think it will cost that much to build it.
