if you read the news yesterday about the incident at friendship garden, i think all the fish died due to the murky water.
Council defended that the park was never designed for any fish. its the public who released the fish into the man-made pond. Some public argued that the coucil didn't put up signs or warning about releasing fish. As for me, I am personally sadden by the incident. Look at the attachment. Thats the photo I took last year. and you probably won't see that again. the news today from Borneo Post.: Quote:

I believe the main cause of the dead was due to hot weather, low water level, over population and oil from feed caused low oxygen level in the water at night when the algae inside the water also consuming oxygen. It is not difficult to solve the problem for fish keeping as it is not the only pond in Sarawak with fish. The pond is big and deep and it is a perfect condition for keeping fish.
Aeration is required by providing mechanical pedals type of aeration device like in commercial fish pond. Allowable fish feed could only be used to feed the fish. Public is not allowed to use the left over bread from bakery that is oily as the residual oil will prevent oxygen from the air to dissolve in the water. With so many gurus in Kuching in keeping kois, the coucil shall not have shortage of advice if they dare to ask. Previously I kept more than 10 kois of average size of 2 feets in a small fibre tank of 8 feet x 4 feet x 2 feet depth. But this is done with effective bio filter system. The water is crystal clear and I never change the water for five years.

so sad the fishes are gone...its weird tat de council says tat de pond are nt built for a fish pond...i mean its even weirder tat any public wanted to release expensive koi fish there ....de council noticed tat de fish has multiplied over de years since it was opened, knowing tat de public feeding of food items tat arent suitable to de fish, then de council shld have put up a notice board within de area.

the council just don't wish to be blame for the incident. in another words "I am not responsible for that, *points finger*" but again, whoever is to be blame, I hope all parties can work together so this won't happen again. the pond is indeed large for some maintenance work. possily some of the dead fountains here shows how bad the water has been. there were 8 fountains i think and left 3 working ones if i am not mistaken.

No one really confirm who really put the fish there. as stated in the news. already got fish at the pond when the park was open. besides having a "living" thing at the park makes the park more alive. now the council shud really look into this. indirectly the fishes at the park became a very very popular place for local and tourist to visit. time for them to do some renovation. Luckily, they still manage to save some fish.

Now... there is something really fishy here... if my memory didn't serve me wrong the council did put some fish in. It was not only the public. If not mistaken the Koi's in the pond is from the council and probably the tilapia, Flower Horn (LO han) tortoise are from the public.
And another I would like to point out how can they say the pond is not design for fish? I nearly laugh my butt off when I read that part. If it was not meant for fishes, first they should have put up a notice up there. But you know what type of notice did they put up? If you guys go to the friendship park take a look at the sign. There is one sign that says NO FISHING! Now a question, if this pond was not design for fish keeping and the council will have no means to put up the no fishing sign. But why was the no fishing sign still erected together with the other notices? Its contradicting. But I won't solely blame it on the council. I also want to blame it on the public who are irresponsible and uncivilised. Especially to those who after eating their take away food and conveniently chuck the Styrofoam boxes into the water not to mention soft drink cans. This are the people who caused the water pollution and furthermore I saw people feeding the fish with oily snacks. These people are the ones who contributed to the water pollution. There are so many ponds in Kuching, Reservoir park and the state library the fishes are all living happily there. The council should control the population of the fish. Like in reservoir and the state lib where they organise fishing competition annually to control the pond from being overpopulated. It is the council's duty to make sure the pond is in a clean condition, which I fail to see them doing so. Look at the picture i posted and see far right... isn't that a no fishing sign?
