Datuk Raziah Mahmud-Geneid = CM's sister right?

Business in Sarawak is all for and in and through the family...tsk, tsk, tsk.

Kuching Tower is further in, you can't really see the site from the main road, it's by the water's edge. Datuk Raziah is also the Polish Honorary Consul, right?

First it was Kuching Isthmus from CMS, then The Isthmus by CMS Land and Properties, now we have Borneo Isthmus. The marina, offices and hotel have already been announced and seem to be undergoing site preparation. Residential, retail and leisure is still up to speculation.

Cronyism and nepotism are very well and alive in Sarawak, unlike their cousins in W Msia which (hopefully) may soon be endangered species. Typical of pek moh companies - hire ang mohs. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Kanasai, see, the project has been inherited from one generation to another, and it takes decades or perhaps millenia to complete....they better build a nice road and also imprive public transport to get to the so called Borneo isthmus, otherwise would be a junk like Kuching CIVIC CENTER

Sarawak wins 24 meeting bids

Kuching (2008-04-07)

THE Sarawak Convention Bureau has confirmed 24 new meetings with an average size of 320 delegates over the next two years. They will bring a total of 7,775 delegates to the East Malaysian state, who will book an estimated 2,000 hotel roomnights and generate RM16.3 million (US$5.1 million) in direct delegate expenditure.

The bureau submitted more than 40 bids last year, of which it won 24, lost 17 and is still waiting for the outcome of 10. Its CEO, Ms Jill Henry, said: “We are very pleased to have achieved a 58 per cent strike rate in our first year of bidding. We were pleasantly surprised at our success in converting international and regional events, which actually outnumbered the national wins five to one.”

She added greater emphasis would be placed this year on enticing national meeting planners to consider Sarawak. “It is an exciting time for us (with the) RM200 million Borneo Convention Centre Kuching with its 36,000m2 of floor space due to open in mid-2009 (and) a doubling of Kuching’s three-, four- and five-star room stock by 2010 with construction of five new hotels.”

Now, this is one way for us to attract tourist. So i hope, any of us here in kuching do take advantage of these lucrative business by doing or promoting any tourism products...

This afternoon i drive along that area and surprise to see the roof structure for the convention center is up. I think construction work for Kuching Tower is in progress from what i can see from the main road. By the way, there is a project signboard titled "Marina Kuching" erected near to the site office. Anyone got any idea about this project undertaken by Ministry of Transport?

sorry for the blurry image cause shot taken using camera phone.

Somehow it reminds me of a bird about to take flight, or even slightly reminiscent of the Putrajaya Convention Centre. The Kuching Marina has in been the works for the past, ummm...3 years? Been proposed, since the Miri Marina project was brought up.

Why is the Ministry of Transport involved? It is a marina, and technically, it is a water-based transport facility. They have been talking about a proper marina for Kuching for quite a while, so no more docking your boats along the Waterfront or paying high sums at the Santubong Boat Club.

And they're sure taking their long sweet time with the basement of Kuching Tower here...I still believe that once the convention centre is up and running, the tower will start climbing. Perhaps they're pressed for workers and are concentrating all efforts on the convention centre first, Kuching Tower second, Kuching Marina third and the rest of Kuching Isthmus, in that order.
