Hey, I went to the F1 demo today. Damn celaka one man...they say start at 1:30, we went at 1...tunggu tunggu until 3:30 baru the F1 cars came out for the demonstration......apalah...

What to do, had to wait for the VIP's to come. Y'know lah, they always rasa important one, event to start at 1:30, they come at 2. I'm not sure if Taib Mahmud was there or not, but the Governor was. We didn't go to padang merdeka, we were at the trafficlights near the summerhouse at the museum gardens there. So we didn't know which VIP went. There was this car with a lot of escorts and the car had a S'wak flag, so I'm pretty sure it was the Governor. What the name lah....people go see F1 car, not to hear these VIP bagi speech. I'm sure they were giving ceramah and thanking ppl for electing them or asking them to vote for them during coming elections...:p

Anyway, after the speech was over, they was this short parade by the St. Teresa brass band and a couple of organizations, I dunno what organizations, I didn't see that part, I only know there was the St Teresa pancaragam playing. And then there was a short cultural dance performed on stage, y'know like Tarian Ngajat by the Ibans etc. etc.

Here's a short description of the track. The track consists of the whole roundabout at Padang Merdeka, and the stretch of road leading from Padang Merdeka to the traffic lights at the Telekom tower and RTM station there. They used metal barricades to form a U-Turn at the traffic lights..so u start at Merdeka Palace, go all the way to the traffic lights, U-turn, then go all the way back to Padang Merdeka, go round the roundabout and come back to Merdeka Palace there.

The demo started at 3, with modified Proton Wira's (painted in Petronas colours) doing laps around the circuit showing off their speed and a bit of drifting skills at the u-turn, nothing spectacular. Just a sort of warm up for the show.

Then came the motorbikes like the one used in the Moto GP. In Petronas colors too. That was the best part of the show besides the F1 cars. There were 500cc, 250cc and 125cc bikes. There were three 125cc bikes, two 250 and one 500. A couple of the riders, mostly the 125cc bikes, popped wheelies which were incredible. The 500cc did try to pop a wheelie, but the bike was too heavy. During their last laps, the bikes accelerated with the brakes on, which caused the tyres to grind the pavement, causing loads of smoke to come out.

Then came the rally cars, the cars usually used in the dirt road racing. Those cars were not really fast, as rally cars are usually not fast.

After that came the highlight of the show. The F1 cars. I wasn't sure which one came out first, Felipe Massa or Giancarlo Fishcella, They didn't come out together, one driver came out and after he finished his laps, the next came out. We couldn't hear the loudspeakers, and the helmets both drivers wore were almost identical, so no idea we came out first. Both did a couple of laps around the circuit, and they also demonstrated a pit stop at one of the laps, which took about 8 seconds.

Both drivers were extremely sporting and when they reached the traffic light U- turn, they stopped the car right in front of the crowd gathered behind the metal barricade, their cars facing the crowd at a slight angle, letting them take pictures of the car at a nice angle. Wah lau, the F1 cars damn loud ah...dunno how to describe, very loud is all i can say. Overall very nice, although the weather was hot and the wait was a tad too long.

Hey Guan, the links not working.

I nicked this off the Sauber official website, you can find it here...

SAUBER PETRONAS at Formula One demo in Kuching,
Sunday, March 14th, 2004

Today SAUBER PETRONAS participated in a Formula One demonstration in the city centre of Kuching, capital of the state of Sarawak, Malaysia in front of a mesmerized crowd of 120,000 people.

Giancarlo Fisichella: "For me it?s the first time with the team here in Malaysia and also the first time that I?m part of the PETRONAS? Malaysian F1 Grand Prix promotion campaign. It?s a very new experience for me. Thanks to that I?m able to meet the people of Malaysia and get to know the country and its culture a bit better, which poses a rare opportunity to me as we usually do not see more of a country than just the race track. It?s great to see and feel how enthusiastic the people are about this sport . They are very friendly and their welcome is warm.
"The demonstration today also gave us a glimpse of what have to expect again next Sunday during the race at Sepang. The weather here is extremely hot and the race is physically demanding, so it was also a kind of little preparation for us today."

Felipe Massa: "I knew this kind of promotion from 2002, my first year with the team. However, it?s a completely different experience as this time we are in another area of Malaysia, in Borneo. It?s PETRONAS? philosophy to bring their own passion for motorsports to all parts of the country and to educate the people about their involvement in this kind of sport. During these promotion days we mainly meet with school children. We try to bring Formula One and its technical aspects closer, but for the kids it?s not just that: for them we give them something which money can?t buy. It?s a life-long memory of a great day, but which is also meant to motivate them for their future career."
