KUCHING: The MV Doulos is to make its fourth trip here on Dec 11 and it is likely to be the final voyage to the city for the ship that dates back to 1914.

Expected to dock at Sim Kheng Hong Port in Pending, the ship operated by a German non profit charity organization - Gute Bucher fur Alee e.V(GBA) will bring 6,000 titles among the half a million books it has on board.

Project coordinator Ginny Drake said that the MV Doulos was expected to be open to the public from Dec 11 to 31 and it served as a fun family outing destination for Kuchingnites especially families, given it coincided with the school holidays.

"We have good mix of books from educational ones to recipe books and we also sell souvenirs, memoribilias and toys which make nice Christmas presents." She stold a press conference here yesterday.

She said the ship had a large section dedicated to children's books and being mostly in English. It is definitely complemented the government's effort to promote use of the language in the school curriculum.

She said the MV doulos - 130m in length and 16.60m in width was barely two years older than the Titanic and started off as a freighter for onions.

It was later used to carry immigrants from Italy to Australia and eventually became a cruiser.,

She said GBA bought the vessel in 1977 and it started sailing over 100 countries since 1978.

This is likely to be the last trip for the MV Doulos to Kuching as GBA plans to retire her in 2010 and replace her with a newer vessel.

The MV Doulos is the in country at the invitation of NECF Malaysia.

But yeah, it was here in singapore sometimes ago this year and the internal of the ship's still the same, with the same wooden shelves & various books to read on.

The boat still floats? Haven't been on that thing in over a decade. I remember I bought a book on marine life there. Deep sea photographs in there still freak me out now as they did so many years back.

They're retiring her. This will be her last voyage.

What fortune. I'll be back in Kuching that time and I'll definitely be paying it a visit. Recently read that it was going to be decommissioned and was wondering if it was coming to Kuching one last time. I think I've been to that ship every time it came to Kuching since I was born, though I think I've gotten it mixed up with the MV Logos.

Btw Fuyu, your quote. You a fan of The Sandman?
