So, if we saved so much energy during earth hour? What did we actually save besides the wear and tear of the light bulbs? Unless the amount of energy output from the powerplant was reduced?

so if we save 20MWatts of energy, and if the powerplant do not reduce production capacity for that 1 hour, then we benefit nothing, is that right?

As far as I know these power plant operator monitor the electricity demand very closely. If demand suddenly spike up, another generator somewhere will kick into life straight away.
I suppose if demand dies down, there should be mechanism to shut down the generator somewhere. I suppose you are right, if your car remain stationary, but your engine is still turned on, you still burn petrol. I think it work on the same principle for those petroldiesel generator, they still burn fuel even if there is no demand.
