Back Yard Breeders- What can we do to help these poor dogs?

I may be a little bit backdated, but I just recently came to know that they is a backyard Breeder operating in Kota Samarahan. I mean I know that there are puppy mills and backyard breeders all over, even in KL, but I did not think that one would be in operation here.

Anyway, here is the article taken from

http://petpawz.blogspot.com/

Link: http://petpawz.blogspot.com/2009/08/what-to-do.html

"The other day, I went to a breeder's house and to my horror, I was greeted by a very disgusting stench and the howling and barking of dogs. I was getting a little worked up by that time, but when the door opened, an old lady opened the door and my heart literally dropped to the floor. How am I - a 19 year old - able to reprimand a woman as old as my grandmother?

I gave her a weak smile and walk into her house and saw a room with a Maltese and a puppy, another room had a Maltese with 4-6 puppies (one puppy even had poo stuck on it's backside), a cage with about 8 Terrier puppies, another cage with about 6 more Maltese puppies. A sick Chihuahua in a cage stacked on top of the cage of 2 Chihuahuas and a Maltese pup.... When I get to the backyard, I felt like crying, about 8 adult Chihuahuas were kepts in ONE cage, 2 large Golden Retrievers in a cage so small they can't turn around, a German Shepherd and a Golden together in another small cage and a GSD in a big cage alone. There were alot more but I couldn't take looking at the crying dogs anymore and walked to the living room. The lady was very nice and I didn't have the heart to say anything to her, neither did I believe that she would take me seriously...

I left with a heavy heart that day. I told my friend, who is also an avid dog lover and she called MKA, which in turn told her that only SSPCA could help but I've given up hope on SSPCA (KCH). I've lodged many reports and complaints to SSPCA however, the admin always told me that it was none of their business.

If it isn't your business, then, whose business is it?

I want to help the puppies, the dogs. But how? How, when the only Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals doesn't want to help?

But one word to all Kuchingites, please do not support the BYB located at Kota Samarahan.

Do not be fooled that cheap equals good.
Are you willing to live with a dog that may have future health problems because of the environment s/he was brought up in?
Do you really want to spend more money in the future because her/his mother didn't give him enough nutrition?
Can you really ignore the fact that while the puppy is happy with you, her/his mother is still suffering in a cage somewhere?!

Think about it.
Stop supporting BYBs."

What can we do when SSPCA themselves say they cannot do anything?

:(

I went to the SSPCA once or twice for some event and got to know the people there.

I got to know their operation and what they do. In conclusion. They have no enforcement authority or power. In any case, if you report to them, they report to the council and the council does the job.

Any stray cats/dogs brought in by the council to the SPCA will be put to sleep within 3-5 days.

Another thing that can do to help these dogs is for the breeder to have proper education? Is there a dog breeding school or course available in Kuching?

You should see the comments some people left in the blog supporting the Back yard Breeder as if it is nothing Wrong. My God! Is there no justice for animal welfare!

government should come up with a regulation on these breeders or pet shops

and regarding the comments, its so obvious that the "anonymous" is the same person defending herself over another comment. Lol. dumbass.

There is no way people who would be defending all these cruelty acts.

The more she acts to defend her own comment as another anonymous, the worse it actually shows.

If she plans to bring this matter to court, I think it would be better in some ways, the least this problem will be highlighted and more people will be aware of it. That will be digging her own grave for her business that is.

You got the photos and that is enough evidence.

I spread this in my FB after you posted it and hope it helps.

Kim, thanks for promoting the blog. I think that more Kuching people should be aware of BYBs and STOP buying from irresponsible breeders. Otherwise, their business will only continue...

webbie: You know what, I would LOVE it if she sues us. Maybe we will be able to imply a few more laws enforcing the protection and welfare of animals. I think she thinks I'm just a stupid kid whom she can scare off with THREATS. D:

one thing i wonder though, I think she could be one of the supplier for the pets at petshop in Kuching.

I sometimes ask around, and those pet shop owner did mention they need to bring down the dog from "sua teng". I wonder if its kota samarahan.

Well just as precaution, pet wanters might want to ask the pet shop "where the dog comes from " first.
