those forms / patterns are not designed to used in a fight or even self defense.

it improves the consistency, balance, mind control, strength control, accuracy and power flow. I think most people who finished up at least level 6 in whatever martial art they do would understand this.

18 movement, 27 movement, 38 movement. the philosophy behind all these movement as I was taught,

"one piece of paper is not heavy at all, but if you add 1 paper a day, every single day, how much impact / weight do you think it will have effect on? "

the theory applies on forms / pattern training.

this is why you need to go for training under a real master to get what you need to know. its not as simple as monkey see monkey do.

I know you are refering to tai chi forms. Yes it does improves on the balance and coordination. In some schools when the student reach high level the sifu will teach martial aspect of tai chi chuan.

lol? i owe those to my taekwondo sifu and recently my taichi sifu. credit goes to them.

there are more theory behind taichi.

for taekwondo (back in the old days), nothing much was taught about it, only brute force and strength control.

until i learn taichi, then i only understand the fundamental of what I should have learned in taekwondo earlier on.

Yes it is very important to understand concept and principle.

For those who are interested with grappling techniques for self defense. I recommend the book "analysis of shaolin chin na" written by Dr Yang Jwing Ming. It is a great book with detail informations and pictures. I bought it from Amazon.com.
