Has anyone been to Ayers Rock (Uluru), Australia?
Interested to backpack travel there? I'm doing homework to see whether it's feasible to go there and just asking our members here "what do you think?"

Go from Adelaide, Australia; take the Ghan if you can, really nice train-ride. Flying there is easy but is so over-rated. If you have time, really, take the train. The desert and bushland/outback isn't as barren as you'd expect.

Otherwise, spend a day or 2 at the most. Go there, marvel, but somehow, you'd feel a pang of guilt as you scale up the rock sacred to the Aborigines of the area.

Yeah, not too long ago. Honestly, nothing more than a big rock with shrubs surrounding it. Only went there after the big hoo-hah over the naming controversy between Ayer's Rock and Ulluru. The 5 star resort there makes Damai look like paradise.

Yeah, they allow tourists to climb it; depending on your fitness level, it's a 6/10 close to the top, but comes with side-railings.

I have not been to Ayers Rock yet. Can you go all the way up there? By cable car or walking up?
