KUCHING: A burst underground water pipe at a bridge linking Muara Tabuan and Pending along Jalan Setia Raja resulted in the bridge’s closure after a section of the road surface sank and cracked yesterday. The bridge, which spans across Sungai Kuap, was sealed off as early as 7am when a 20-metre section sank and posed a danger to motorists and heavy vehicles plying the normally busy route. Project manager Philip Ting, who was present at the scene, said the sinking was due to a burst underground water pipe. He said workers had noticed cracks on the road surface the evening before, which then prompted a search for the source of the problem. Ting added they identified the burst water pipe by 2am yesterday and, after noticing the sinking of the road had worsened, sealed off the bridge and began works to overcome the problem. He gave the assurance that the situation would be rectified within 24 hours at a cost of a “few hundred thousand ringgit”. Meanwhile, workers at the site, assisted by policemen, diverted the flow of traffic away from the bridge, with only motorcycles and pedestrians allowed to cross. This, however, resulted in congestion in other areas, particularly Foochow Road, Tabuan Jaya and Chawan Road, as motorists were forced to seek alternate routes from Muara Tabuan to Pending and vice versa. Both the incumbent assemblywoman for Pending Violet Yong and potential candidate Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian visited the site after learning of the incident. Attach file:  A00579190.jpg (73.28 KB)
