Kuching faces worsening traffic congestion

2011/08/20

KUCHING: Traffic congestion here is increasingly getting worse. According to the SPU, there is a car for almost every house in the state capital.

Sarawak Minister of Housing and Urban Development Datuk Amar Abang Johari
Tun Openg said highways and major roads in the city saw heavy traffic, not only during peak hours but also on normal days.

"Based on the SPU study, it would take another few more years for the figure
to double to two cars to each house in Kuching, owing to the existing poor

public transportation system," he told reporters after a presentation of Hari
Raya contributions to the needy in the Satok state constituency here today.

According to him, the SPU study suggested some proactive measures which
included widening existing roads and improving the present city public
transportation.

Kuching City, comprising North Kuching City Council and South Kuching City
Council, has a population of 600,000.

Also present at the ceremony was Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy
Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu Youth
chief. - Bernama

**Look, years ago, I have foresee the problem....this taffic problem will never comes to an end if they didn't put any efort in improving the public transport in the city and between cities...! Electric rail link, electric tram (powered by Bakun HEP), BRT MUST be implemented ASAP....or they prefer to wait till the traffic problems like in Bangkok and started to do something...that's gonna be too late!

Really congested at all time? I don't think so. I think it's only during the peak season.

Besides, what does this topic has to do with the tourism section?
