KUCHING: Bus commuters in the state capital can expect improved services following a major step taken by five Kuching-based bus companies in forming a joint-venture firm.

The new firm – Kuching City Bus Services Sdn Bhd (KCBS) – was set up by Chin Lian Long Motor Vehicle Co Bhd, Petra Jaya Transport (S) Sdn Bhd, Regas Transport Company Bhd, Sarawak Transport Company Bhd and Bau Transport Company Bhd and will operate a fleet of more than 200 buses.

KCBS’s mission is to streamline and rejuvenate the state capital’s public transport system to ensure an efficient, safe and cost-effective bus service for commuters, said its spokesman Mohamad Abideen Bidari.

“Our vision is to encourage Kuching citizens to adopt public transport as their preferred mode of travel.

“This will in turn help to lighten the Government’s burden on fuel subsidy as well as ease the rapidly worsening traffic congestion in the city,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Abideen said the new company was now working with various related government agencies on its future plans.

“Expect a better way to travel,” he promised.

It is understood that the latest move taken by the bus companies was the result of pressure by the authorities to improve their services within a set time-frame or lose their licences to new firms.

The five bus firms might work towards a merger eventually.

Sources said they were discussing ways to improve their image by providing a reliable and improved service, replacing old buses and extending their coverage to more areas.
