Marrybrown to open first outlet in Tanzania

By ALICIA LIM

JOHOR BARU: Home-grown fast-food franchise Marrybrown Fried Chicken Sdn Bhd will make its maiden appearance in East Africa with its first franchise outlet in April.

The restaurant would be located in Donoma, the capital city of Tanzania, group managing director Nancy Liew told a press conference yesterday.

Nancy Liew
“We plan to have 10 outlets in Tanzania in five years.

“We are happy that negotiations have been successfully concluded after many years,” she said, adding that the company hoped to take its restaurants to more parts of the world.

According to Liew, each Marrybrown franchise in Tanzania would cost US$500,000 (RM1.6mil).

At present, Marrybrown has over 200 outlets across the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. Of the total, 80 restaurants are in Malaysia.

Liew also said the company planned to open 20 outlets in the country this year, with an outlet opening at the Kuching Airport this month and another at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang next month.

Targeted sites were airports, shopping malls and hospitals.

“Just last week, we had new franchises opening in Bintang Supermarket in Shah Alam and KRICO supermarket in Penang,” said Liew.

Marrybrown received the Best Food and Beverage Brand award in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific last month by the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation.

Capital of Tanzania is DODOMA. -_-;

They should open their first outlet in Dar es Salaam, as it's the largest and busiest commercial city in Tanzania. Sorta like Canberra vs Sydney. One of my good buddies (Indian descent) in uni was from Dar, so I know.

And while they wanna penetrate the East African market, they should also set up in Kenya and South Africa. Other parts of the African continent are not worth considering for business.

According to US CIA fact-book, Tazania is one of the poorest country in the world. GDP only US 1,100 compare to Malaysia US 14,400. I wonder Rm 1.6mil per outlet in Tanzania is justified.

Imagine what you can do with RM1.6mil for restaurant in malaysia, well in Tanzania maybe 14 time bigger restaurant???

Maybe some expert can advise....

It's in the departure hall, the opposite side of the Coffee Bean near gate 2 or 3.

I've tried Marrybrown in Senai Airport while waiting for my flight back to Kuching. I ordered the 2 chicken combo set (drink + french fries) and it costs RM11++. Not cheap if compared to KFC.
Anyway, I personally think that their fried chicken isn't that bad! Comparable to KFC if not better haha!
But their french fries is tasteless though.
