Can anyone give us some advice about travelling by bus in and around Kuching, please? We will be in Kuch for a week in May and would like to travel by bus around the area as a change from taxis/car.
Could anyone suggest where we might go or the best place to catch buses from. This will be our 4th trip to Kuching and we want to look at more than the city this time. Thanks in advance

Hi sophie,
Welcome back to this site. Traveling by public city bus isn't convenient as the routes are messy. and I see it as the worst method of transportation in the city. Long distance to national parks / tourist attraction might be OK as the Sarawak tourism board has directions for it. But moving around the city with bus can be a bad idea and may not be safe either. I would say rent a car? small mini Kancil auto, RM110.00 per day to get a round the city can be convenient.

you do mean "isn't convenient" right... typo?
seriously, the bus service in kuching is nearly non-existent. And since most places are far away from each other in Kuching, traveling by rental car is by far the best method to go around Kuching.

Bus as a form of transportation is the pits here! Never mind the fact that some areas are not serviced.. but the fact that the buses come and go at irregular timings is bad enough..
Sad truth of Kuching, unfortunately. Best rent a car, if you wanna go around on your own.

Yeap I would recommend rent-a-car service though and looks like our bus system isn't that passenger-friendly/convenient after all. You may also opt for Bicycle as I ever saw english tourist tour the city with that ;) A bike's optional but what if it rains? haha! Or you can look for custom tours by locals.

Isn't it amazing that a reliable transit system is non-existence in a city with a population of 600K? Maybe the majority of you folks prefer to own & drive your hondas & toyotas, thereby negating the demand for & viability of public transportation. Good for the car dealers, though!

Talking about car renting, how about those who doesn't know how to drive? How about tourist or budget tourists?

KGB1, it is not that we don't want a bus, we buy cars because we have no choice to turn to. And you know cars are most expensive here in Sarawak, even more expensive than Sabah.
