KUALA LUMPUR: Beginning next year, Sept 16, which is Malaysia Day has been declared a public holiday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the day would involve activities that would foster the 1Malaysia spirit.

He added this meant Malaysians would have a twin celebration, to commemorate the country’s independence starting next year

Najib said National Day on Aug 31 would be celebrated with formal events such as a parade to commemorate the historical moment and it would remind the people about the struggle in achieving independence from the colonists.

He made the announcement during the question-and-answer session at Parliament on Monday.

Najib said Sabah and Sarawak, which joined Malaysia in 1963 and the formation of Malaysia as an independent country was a very important moment in history.

“We want the joy and sorrows of the people in Sabah and Sarawak to be felt by the people in the Peninsula,” he said.

“Therefore, I would like to announce to the people of Malaysia that the Cabinet has recently made the decision to celebrate Hari Malaysia on Sept 16 starting 2010.”

Malaysia Day would be celebrated with events that would foster closer unity, understanding between the different races and community success and achievement through sports, social culture and arts, to spur the 1Malaysia spirit, he added.

Oh deary dear; what happened to the 'confusing history' rhetoric they were throwing about just last year? Confusing 31/8 and 16/9? Oh well. Yet another public holiday.

At least Sabah and Sarawak can finally 'officially' remember that we joined the Federation on 16 September 1963. Though something tells me Lord White Hair's plans for a 'Golden Jubilee' to be organised in Kuching on 16 Sept 2013 somehow had something to do with this.

Too many public holidays: bad when people want to get work done.

[Good old Dr M. My sentiments exactly.]

Dr M has a laugh over holiday declaration

PUTRAJAYA: Most Malaysians welcomed the declaration of Sept 16 as a national public holiday but former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had other ideas.Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s move yesterday in declaring Sept 16 a public holiday to mark the day Malaysia was formed 46 years ago was met with laughter by Dr Mahathir.

“We should have more holidays,” he told reporters in an immediate reaction to the announcement.

“Work is not important. Holiday is important,” Dr Mahathir said sarcastically.

He said he did not want to criticise Najib’s effort, but pointed out that he was often described as a “workaholic”.

“I don’t know. I do not want to criticise the prime minister but they told me (during my tenure) that I was a workaholic.

“But now, I’m on a long holiday. I’m not working for anybody,” he said, smiling from ear to ear.

“I work even now after my retirement and people get fed up. I didn’t stop working. So actually I’m on long holidays, every day is a holiday (for me), it is just I am not working for anybody.”
