Kuching is a winner
by Annie Freeda Cruez

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Kuching may not be known in the Western Pacific region for development, but the city wins hands down when it comes to health standards.
The World Health Organisation declared Sarawak?s state capital a model "healthy city" last October for its exemplary role in ensuring the health of its residents.

"Healthy cities like Kuching are continuously implementing plans to improve the health of the people," its Western Pacific Building Healthy Communities and Populations director, Dr Linda Milan, told the New Straits Times.

She said the healthy city concept involved authorities and the general population jointly analysing and resolving health problems.

Dr Milan said Kuching had healthy wet markets, especially in Serian, which adhered to WHO standards.

"The different stakeholders in the market, the sellers and buyers, local councils, health authorities and veterinary officers, work together to see how they can improve the situation."

In many countries in the Western Pacific region, market places, especially wet markets, were so unhygienic as to endanger the health and safety of the communities they served, she said.

"We want to improve situations in wet markets because of the avian flu outbreak and the threat of a human pandemic. We have seen how birds are kept in cages, slaughtered and sold in wet markets which in some places are also near food stalls," she said.

"It is the intention of WHO that every city in its Healthy Cities network will eventually have a healthy marketplace programme."

She said WHO had issued guidelines for markets to help local authorities.

I thought Serian is in Pedawan Council, not in the City Council. hmm... probably they are taking into account the first division...
